Functional Vision Assessment

Personalised Treatment Plan
A functional vision assessment usually takes 1–2 hours and is tailored to your individual needs.
Before Your Appointment
Before your appointment, you may be asked to complete a questionnaire about your symptoms, general health and visual history.
This helps the optometrist understand your concerns and plan your assessment.

Functional Vision Assessment
In addition to a comprehensive eye examination, you will be asked to complete a range of activities designed to assess how your visual system functions during everyday tasks. A typical assessment consists of:
- Eye health check
- Eye Movements and Tracking
- Eye teaming (binocular vision)
- Peripheral awareness
- Visual acuity
- Focusing skills
- Visual perception
- Visual-motor integration
Handwriting and pencil grip
(where appropriate)
A functional vision assessment usually takes 1–2 hours and is tailored to your individual needs.
Your optometrist may also use specialised lenses, prisms, coloured filters and other equipment that you may not have seen during a routine eye examination. These are assessment tools that help determine how your visual system responds under different conditions.
Depending on your symptoms, you may also be asked to carry out simple movement activities, such as walking, balancing, catching a ball or crawling. These tasks help assess how vision works together with posture, movement and coordination as part of your overall visual function.

Personalised Treatment plan
Some people may only need advice and monitoring, while others may benefit from additional treatment. Your optometrist will explain the most appropriate management plan based on your individual needs and review your progress over time.
