Meet The Neuro-developmental Optometrists
Hear from some of our current members why they became neuro-developmental optometrists and how it has benefitted their career:
I used to get frustrated when people came for a sight test, telling me about their visual difficulties but I couldn’t find anything wrong with their acuity or health. I felt like a failure when I couldn’t help and then I found ANBO and it all started to make sense. Now I am able to help.
I love being a Neurodevelopmental Optometrist and can‘t think of a better career. Seeing the lives of children turned around from low self esteem and feeling like they are not good at anything, to flourishing young beings that will try and often be able to achieve much higher than expected gives me appreciation and adds value to my life that even if I did not earn money from it, it would be worth while. (However, I am earning a good living). OVT 2 really was the course that got me fired up, and working with some young people who benefitted so much from vision therapy had me sold to the concept. Since I have never stopped learning more about the way the brain works and develops and how to help it develop better.
There is so much work out there as children‘s brain development is impacted by a lot of the factors of modern life. So once you have helped a couple the word will spread without needing to pay for advertising. Your customers will do that for you!
This is so rewarding and life-changing that I am still working at nearly 73 years!
I enjoy neuro-optometry because it's the essence of what it is to be an optometrist; working to improve and optimise your patients' vision. But this is vision as an entire sense, properly integrated with the other senses, not just reading the smallest line on the letter chart. It is about making someone's vision comfortable, enabling them to do what they love, or even just being able to go into a supermarket without feeling overwhelmed. You can effect real, meaningful change where others haven't and that is hugely rewarding
